This quote made me connect back to another idea or musing that I recently heard, and that is...we should only surround ourselves by people who are going to life us higher.

I firmly believe in this idea, primarily because insecurities and doubts can have detrimental effects on a person, and when your own ideas and goals are put down, even further problems can develop.

I believe it is extremely important and valuable to surround yourself with people who are only going to have a positive effect on you, not people who bring you down and degrade your goals and aspitations.

After all, as it has been said, you become like the 5 people you hang around the most. That, too, is a strong statement. With that, I will be making a firm effort to only say positive things about others, and only say something that will lift someone up, not bring them down.
On Thursday, I met up with Nasser over a nice cup of warm coffee. We were able to catch up on our weeks and talk about finals and all of our piles of homework. It was a cold day, and Nasser was wrapped up in a big 'ol winter coat, telling me how much he loves the cold.

I think he's crazy, I am so ready for the warm weather! Nasser was telling me about all of the compilations involved in him flying back home to Saudi Arabia and then to Europe; there is a lot of paper work and visa information to deal with! This weekend he was planning on driving to Houston in order to go the National Embassy (if he explained that right?) to get all of his visa paperwork in order.

Nasser asked me where he could get a passport photo taken, to use for his visa. I told him to go to CVS or Walgreens and they can do it for a very low price! He was so confused!

"Why would you get a passport photo taken at a Pharmacy?"

Valid point... but I tried to explain to him that a CVS or Walgreens serves the purpose of a convenience store, in a way. I suppose I had never really considered that they originally served the purpose of a pharmacy, and yet you can buy basically anything you need there, quick.

Nasser made another valid point, that I had also never considered. If a pharmacy is intended to help people get better from either a sickness, cold, etc., then why would they sell cigarettes and beer and wine? Isn't that counterintuitive. Yes..yes, it is. But hey, it's the American way? I really didn't know how to justify it, primarily because I had never really thought about it in that way.

As Nasser and I wrapped up our semester of numerous conversations, he told me how much he enjoyed talking to an American and getting to know more about my culture through our conversations. I told him how I, too, enjoyed our conversations and that they really opened my eyes to some of the not-so-normal traditions and routines that we as Americans deem normal.

These conversations served as a catalyst to new ways of thinking and viewing my own lifestyle, in addition to the exposure of humor I have obtained in the class. While Nasser and I discussed each of our own countries culture and traditions, I not only became more exposed to the culture of Saudi Arabia, but I came to find a new sense of pride and love for my own country and its culture, despite how odd some of them may be.

As we parted ways, Nasser took one more step towards being closer to his journey back to home, and I took one more step towards a greater understanding of myself, my own culture, and my country.

Nasser is very ready to get out of Texas and move on to the next chapter in his life. He explained to me that he is lacking any sort of motivation and is ready for the summer, to travel around Europe with his family. Ha, I'm jealous! Nasser told me that, despite his lack of enjoyment in America, that we are much nicer and much more pleasant to be around than Europeans. I guess thats one positive that Nasser has found here in America.

Nasser has had a busy week with his cousin visiting that you could tell he was very distracted during our conversation... he was probably ready to get out of there and go have some fun. Nasser again had brought some of his philosophy books with him and he told me how much more he enjoyed reading those types of books, in English, than the ones he is required to read in his TCU English classes.

I understand that.. we all do have our own preferences, and that is nothing to be embarrassed or ashamed of.

Nasser and I talked about college sports, and he explained how he wasn't quite interested. He said football was a boring sport...WHAT! Don't sat that to a TCU football fan! He said most of the American sports were not exciting to him and that he did not understand why we, as Americans, invest so much and get so excited over a simple game.

I tried to explained to him that this was part of the American culture and that it is something we greatly enjoy. Coming together to watch our TCU Horned Frogs play football is one of the greatest southern traditions to take part in, but I suppose it is something that only an American football fan can really understand.

Nasser told me that at home, they fully support horse races and that is one large part of their sporting culture. He explained to me the scoring system, and even how people cheat, ha! But it was very interesting for me to hear about the contrasting differences in each country's sporting cultures.

Nasser had to cut our meeting short this week because he needed to spend time with his cousin, so I completely understood. It was great to catch up, and we planned to meet next week, for our final meeting.

until our next laugh,
We talked awhile about my trip back home to Albuquerque, and he was interested to hear all the details about my hometown. And I of course, was eager to tell him! I told him about my family Easter traditions, like Hot Crossed-Buns on Easter morning. Always a treat!

As we continued to talk, Nasser asked me about scholarships. I thought it was a peculiar topic, but we launched right into it. He told me that one of his friends had gotten a scholarship just because he was from a wealthy family in Africa, and he was very puzzled by this. He struggled to understand the concept of scholarships, and why anyone would just give someone such a large chunk of money to go to school.

I found it interesting that he asked me such a question, for I never really thought about the concept in depth. as I explained that a lot of scholarship money comes from alumni or donors, I think he was able to understand. I told him that the hard work that some students did in high school paid off for them in college, allowing their to tuition to be taken care of.

Additionally, Nasser was confused by the concept of donating back to the school; why would you give money for something you're not buying? Yes, I get the point, but I explained that is was a way of showing support for the school, etc. It amazes me how small concepts like donations and scholarships are topic that are not universal. It has been a great experience to talk with Nasser and get a better understanding of his culture, and even of my own.

Nasser's cousin is visiting him for the next few weeks and Nasser seemed very excited to show him around and give him a taste of what American and Texas is really like. Perhaps his cousin will enjoy the Texas lifestyle for than Nasser.

Nasser is still very excited to begin his new chapter of life at university in London next year. I must admit, I am a little jealous! But when he asks me why I love TCU and living in Texas, I could go on and on for hours, so I think I made the right choice.

Lastly, we talked about the weather, because today was such a chilly day! Or at least I thought so. It was drizzling a little bit and there was crisp breeze in the air. I told Nasser I was ready for it to warm up so we could enjoy activities outside, but Nasser said he much more enjoys the cool weather, for he absolutely hates it when it gets too hot! If we think Texas summer weather is tough, think about Saudi Arabia summer weather!

until our next laugh,

I ran into a bit of trouble with this assignment, so I had to improvise with pictures, but I am still able to portray the same message. While I was in the airport looking for items to help me "find the meaning of life," I rummaged through the mass amounts of collectors items in the Albuquerque Sunport (airport) looking for interesting items. Once I found an item that I felt "defined life"for me, I arranged the objects to take a picture (running low on cash! HA) and immediately the airport security swarmed around me.

Apparently there is a no picture rule in the Albuquerque airport.....? Whoops! But hey, that's okay! I was able to remember what objects I selected and downloaded images to use so that I could describe my objects clearly.

The first object is a ristra:

The ristra serves as a firm definition of home to me. Since I am from New Mexico, this is a object that is seen all over the state. In fact, we have about three in our house. Since chili, red or green, is such a dominant aspect of our food and culture, we hang ristras throughout our house. The formation of the chilies is to preserve them to consume later, but nowadays they are mostly used for decoration. When I see a ristra, or even just a picture of one, it instantly reminds me of home and my upbringing, which I believe helps define the meaning of life to me.

Kokopelli:

The kokopelli is an image seen all around New Mexico, whether you travel to Indian ruins, or on the walls of the best mexican diner in Albuquerque. The kokopelli serves as a fertility diety, and is a widely used Native American symbol. With such a large dominance in New Mexican culture, it is an image to me that is easily recognizable. When I travel away from home and see the symbol of the kokopelli, I am quickly reminded of my family adventures to the Indian ruins, or the taste of the fluffy sopapilla at my favorite restaurant.

Turquoise:

Not only is turquoise a gorgeous color in itself, the jewelry created by the artists at the Indian Market in Santa Fe is phenonmenal. The impeccable work of the Indian artists is another great definition of home to me. Turquoise can be seen all over the state of New Mexico and is used in many home furnishing, decorations, and jewelry.

Despite my rule breaking tendencies at the airport, I hope this blog served its purpose in describing my objects that I would define life with from a giftshop. These objects serve as a strong resemblance of home and the welcoming feeling of my family. It is often difficult to be away from home for long periods of time, but little reminders like turqoiuse or a chili ristra help me remember my childhood and family memories.

until our next laugh,

eavesdropping laughter

Although I struggled to allow myself to eavesdrop in public
places and listen to what induces laughter, I let my guard down and listened in
on some conversations. I paid extra attention to what induced the most laughter and found there are many more catalysts other than just a joke or humorous situation.

While sitting in the airport on my heading home to Albuquerque for Easter
break, I realized that people these days (maybe just grumpy travelers) complain, a lot. I was listening intently to all the people I came near to hear what they were laughing about. No one was laughing! It was compliant after complaint, grumble grumble. I understand traveling can often be a tiring and frustrating process, but c'mon, laugher makes everything better!

I found it rather disappointing and sad that it took so much effort for me to hear a conversation that included laughter; laughter is the best medicine, right?

While sitting in the airport, it is only obvious that you will witness a traveller sprinting through the terminal, or a heated complaint at the traveller's desk about a late flight, or missing a connecting flight. An airport really is one of the best spots to eavesdrop and people watch...humans are very peculiar beings, especially when under a bit of stress.

One of the main catalysts of laughter I recognized while sitting in the airport was the entertainment people found in others' travel frustrations. When a person would be sprinting through the terminal, the cackling would begin and subtle comments like, "run" or "run little man, run!" would echo through my gate. Yes, I agree, it was funny. And I may have even made some small comments in my head... seeing some sprinting with a backpack on, bobbing up and down, while stringing along a rolling suitcase that is running over other's toes is quite a hilarious picture. But hey, I guess we have all been there a time or two.

While I was sitting at my gate, there was one plane ahead of me, waiting one one woman, attempting to take off in time. The lady felt the need to stop in at the restroom on the way to her gate while she was already 15 minutes late, and the WHOLE plane was waiting for her. When people sitting at the gate realized that the whole plane was waiting for just one woman, the chuckles and comments began. It almost seemed as if this type of laughter was rooted from disgust or shock at how ignorant the woman was. The flight attendants, especially, made numerous comments and laughed over the whole situation once the plane was finally cleared for departure. It was rather shocking how some people don't recognize the importance of timeliness or courtesy to others, and this realization spurred on much laughter for everyone sitting at my gate.

I believe the root of laughter can truly come from anywhere. We find humor in situations that are funny, and often situations that are overly frustrating or ridiculous. Laughter not only is a response to humor and funny situations, but serves as a relief from frustration and anger. Laughter also serves as a response of disgust or shock: how can that be happening?

The situation or location in which you eavesdrop or observe laughter can play a large role in what truly induces laughter; the same themes may run through the humorous situations, such as relief, funny situations, disgust, frustration, or shock. For instance, if I had been observing people at a zoo, much laughter would have come from the silly actions of the animals, or the horrendous smell the elephants put off! We as humans have a knack for finding the ironic or humorous moments in our daily lives.

After spending a lot of time laughing with my family this Easter weekend, I have been much more attentive to what makes people laugh. This weekend, much laughter came from happiness and the enjoyment of family traditions.

until our next laugh,
This week, March 28, I was able to meet up with
Nasser. As we talked, Nasser told me that he had a really rough day this week,
dealing with his struggles to adjust to the lifestyle of Texas and America.
After a day of going back and forth about how to manage his adjustments, Nasser
decided that he is going to transfer out of TCU, vacation in Europe this
summer, and attend a university in London.

It seemed to me that he was very happy about this choice, and that leaving TCU would result in more happiness and enjoyment for Nasser. He hasn't told anyone else the news yet, but he thinks his parents will be excited to hear about his new decision. He did admit that he will be very sad to leave his sister, who also lives in Fort Worth and attends the ESL classes with him. He loves watching his niece and nephew and will miss them a lot, but he thinks it is the best choice for him at this point in his life.

He explained to me that it is very
difficult for him to live in Texas, or America in general, because he feels
like an outsider. Coming from Saudi Arabia, he is used to being surrounded by
people who share his same beliefs, ideals, and family-oriented lifestyle. While
at TCU, Nasser has felt that he doesn’t have many opportunities to connect with his own people and that he would be better suited in London, where many of Saudi
Arabians attend university. Additionally, he explained to me that he doesn’t
like the lifestyle in Texas in regards to “everything being big.” He thinks we
as Americans are too caught up in material things, etc. and that we don’t have
the ideals that he cherishes at home. He is excited to live in London, and experience the "big city" lifestyle. He enjoys exploring big cities that are easily explored on foot, as opposed to Texas where everything is spread so far apart.

Nasser was worried that he offended me by telling me that he
doesn’t like our lifestyle, but I assured him I understood and that I was glad
he was making a choice to make himself more comfortable. Now that he has made
the big decision, he is eager for summer to come so he can move on to a new
chapter of his life.

Nasser and I also talked about the books that he is required
to read for his English classes at TCU. I found it rather humorous how much
Nasser hates the books he was
required to read, such as Hunger Games.
He couldn’t believe that we, especially as young people, would enjoy a book
discussing young children fighting to the death because they were picked in a
drawing.

Yes, I do understand the ridiculousness of the concept of the series, but I absolutely loved the
series. Nasser brought a book in that he was reading for leisure; he was
reading a philosophy book written by a German writer and explained how he
really enjoys reading about philosophy and topics relating to the meaning of
life, etc. I was rather impressed because he was reading this deeply
intellectual book in English. It is
obvious that he has obtained a good grasp and understand about the English
language in his ESL classes.

the perfect weekend

//

This weekend, I took some time for myself, and set aside time to spend with my friends, creating enjoyable and relaxing moments together.

I must admit, I spent a lot of time in bed, curled up in the covers with a cup of hot tea on the night stand, as I caught up on some of my favorite television shows. Sometimes I don't realize how busy I am until I sit down and do nothing. It is a quite a relief.

Since I have come to college, I have recognized that I most definitely need my alone time; whether it be to watch tv alone, lay in bed and let all my tangled up thoughts unravel, or simply go for a drive along a nice Texas highway. I like to be alone, but I also love to be surrounded by those who bring out the laughter and excitement within me. I cherish my time I can spend alone with no distractions, allowing me to escape from my massive to-do list.

After taking time to let myself unwind, I spent genuine time with some of my dear friends. My roommates and I became overly excited to use my new "mini-pie maker," which I won on Good Morning America when I was in New York for Spring Break! I am not one to cook or bake on my free time, but I thought it would be fun to make a little dessert, and enjoy it with laughter on top.

Our pies were magnificent, topped with a scoop of Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream. It was quite a success. I realized that we all get so caught up in our school work, internship searches, and other obligations, we never take time to relax and do something we really enjoy. Making the mini pies was a fun little escape from our daily routines. When we opened up the griddle and realized we were successful, spouts of laugher echoed through the kitchen, and we eagerly ate them quickly.

As I spent time with my friends, I came across a quote that made me recognize that I need to not be in such a rush to grow up, but to remember that there is still a child inside of all of us.

Some days, we just have to recognize that life is meant to be enjoyed and that all things don't need to be taken so seriously. I am working on this in my own life, in an effort to really enjoy each day that I am given. As I try to find enjoyment in everything I do, I am will be paying more attention to songs that I enjoy, a message from a loved one, and the extra five minutes laying in my bed, swaddled in the cozy sheets.

As my definitions of humor, laugher, and happiness are expanding this semester, whether it be through group discussions, funny videos, novels about dark humor, or even my blogs, I believe that I am growing as an individual...growing to enjoy life more through laughter.

I wrote about Slaughter House Five in my other post, but I thought I would mention it a bit here. As a dark humor novel, I completed the book feeling rather indifferent. I neither hated it, nor loved it, but rather accepted it for what it was. It was incongruous, for it was not what would be expected when talking about the violent bombings of Dresden, but Vonnegut's commentary made the novel enjoyable and easily readable.

//

After finishing Slaughter House Five, I feel as though my definition of humor has yet again expanded. When I first began this semester, humor to me was a funny joke, wit, or a comedian. Throughout the course, I have added on to my definition dramatically. Now, I can relate humor to the Relief Theory, the Superiority Theory, or even the Incongruity Theory. Humor is a means of expression, release, and pleasure.

Humor can be the laughter induced by someone else's pain, the outburst of laughter when one releases their struggles and frustration, or one can even find humor in unexpected situations. Upon reading Vonnegut's Slaughter House Five, humor in my mind has developed further.

Dark Humor. That is the plain and simple definition of Vonnegut's commentary about the Dresden bombing, which many of us had unfortunately heard of before. When I read this book, I caught myself feeling rather indifferent about the content, which I find surprising. This novel is filled with commentary that runs all over the map, time traveling, fighting in wars, and drunkenly calling old friends. The reading itself was rather simple to take in, but I wouldn't consider this novel an "easy read." I believe that there are many underlying messages being conveyed through the text, especially that of dark humor.

Dark humor, also known as black comedy or humor, is a form of humor that makes light of otherwise depressing, saddening, or dark subjects: Dresden bombing.

The Dresden bombing was a massacre that took the lives of over 25,000 innocent humans. With a topic like this, one would expect a serious commentary on the struggle of the innocent, the fight for life, etc. But, playing off of the Incongruity Theory, the readers are provided with a much different volume of text.

Vonnegut explains that he originally wanted to write a book about the Dresden bombings, but could never remember enough to write about. The rest of the book follows the life of Billy Pilgrim, who travels through time, communicates and interacts with aliens and fights in the bloody war. Throughout the novel, the main character is all over the place, switching from the commentary on the hot shower in the war camps, to the spaceship the Tralfamadorians picked him up in. In this sense, it may be viewed as a more "difficult read."

I believe that one of the main reasons this novel is viewed as dark humor is because Vonnegut actually did survive the Dresden bombing, allowing ourselves to justify the fact that the seriousness of the topic is extracted, in a way. I do believe that if an outsider, one who did not take part in the vulgar war and bombing of Dresden, the commentary would be even more greatly criticized. Because some of the accounts do come first hand experiences, the humor within Vonnegut's writings are accepted as dark humor, not inappropriate. Although this book is banned frequently banned in schools, it is a well-known novel, explicitly explained as dark humor.

One of my favorite (I suppose I should use favorite lightly) scenes near the end of the novel is the man and his tea pot. I believe I viewed the scene as humorous because of the chaos and violence occurring all around the battlefield, and one man is killed primarily because he stole a tea pot. There, I believe, Vonnegut's humor, and possibly disgust, with the war is deeply expressed.

As an anti-war book, Vonnegut wrote the novel in an unexpected and creative way, which possibly has led to its great popularity and well-known nature. As I mentioned before, as I read the novel I found myself indifferent to the writing, neither enjoying it nor disliking it. I think I merely accepted the writings as it came, which I am going to try to continue implementing as I read future novels, in an effort to expand my own creativity and enjoyment.

Nasser was eager to tell me all about his trip, driving all the way to Houston, Texas. On his trip, he, his sister, his brother-in-law, and their children, all drove to San Antonio, College Station, and Houston. He told me how much he did not like College Station because it was way too small and had absolutely nothing to do. Although he is not a big fan of Fort Worth, Texas, he did admit that he likes it much more than College Station and is glad he goes to TCU instead of Texas A&M. Ha, me too!

Nasser enjoyed the River Walk in San Antonio and thought it was a great place to visit. He enjoyed the night life, and loved exploring a new city. While in Houston, Nasser explained that he didn't do too much, but that it was a much needed break and he enjoyed the vacation. Although he got stuck following his sister around while she shopped, he enjoyed his trip to the southern areas of Texas.

Nasser asked me why everyone was wearing green yesterday, and I was able to tell him all about St. Patrick's Day! He thought it was just so funny that everyone wore green, shamrocks, and funny Irish clothing. He really got a kick out of the crazy holiday that we as Americans amplify to such a great level. And when you do think about the tradition, it is rather humorous!

I was able to tell Nasser all about my trip to New York, and he was very interested to learn about the different landmarks in New York City, for he has never been there before. I told him all about the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, Central Park, and the Plaza. I even got to tell him about the St. Patrick's Day parade that was in full swing on Saturday.

A "parade" was a new term for Nasser to learn and he immediately related it to "Carnival." I find it so interesting that there are things, such as a parade, that we deem as a normal term or concept, but when we are asked why we do such things, it is difficult to explain. Sometimes the easiest response is ..."just because?" But that of course is no help.

When I tried to explain why we as American celebrate St. Patrick's Day, I realized that I didn't even know myself. Why do we celebrate it? Why do we all wear green, and get pinched if we don't? It is in fact an odd concept.

By talking to Nasser, I have become much more aware of my own country's customs, and I have recognized that they are not exactly "normal." But what really is normal? I personally don't think there is a normal, but rather things we have been accustomed to, and accepted as tradition without questioning why.

Now that I am more aware of the fact that our customs and traditions are not universal, I am more eager to understand the true meaning of why we do certain things and why we participate in particular traditions. My ESL discussions have made me much more aware and eager to learn.

the city that never sleeps

I am sad to see spring break slowly slip away, as we reach the end of the semester and the pile up of assignments, test, and papers. But, it's okay, spring break was a wonderful break from the stress of school.

I was so lucky to travel to New York for my spring break, exploring the city with some of my dearest friends.

I can honestly say, I practically ate my way through the city. But, there is nothing wrong with that in my opinion. Eating the local NY cuisine was my way of exploring the city, escaping from the typical tourist attractions. Yes, I did see Freedom Tower, and Grand Central Station, and took a few pictures of Times Square, but it will be the experiences of exploring and getting lost in a new city that I will remember the most.

One of my favorite little places to eat was Alice's Tea Cup... almost 3 hours of my second day in NY was spent sipping on a delicious pot of tea, munching on moist and delicious scones, enjoying the company of my dearest friends. Needless to say, there was much laughter that echoed from our side of the little pink tea room. It was pure relaxation and enjoyment.

Laughter and food were two staples of my trip to the big apple.

Our first evening, my roommate and I were terribly lost in the underworld of the NY subway system...and both of our phones had died. Everyone that was waiting for us had no idea where we were, and well... neither did we. But, we made the absolute best of it. We ran up and down the terminals of the subway, in and out of the turnstiles, eagerly trying to figure out where we were and where we needed to be. Every wrong turn transformed into a spat of contagious giggles, and it was actually quite relieving. Relief Theory anyone?

As I explored the city, got terribly lost, and dealt with the gobbles of tourists trying to fit on the busy streets of Manhattan, I began to realize much about myself. At a younger age, I would have been easily frustrated with the crowds of people, I would have become emotional and upset upon being lost in the big city, and I probably would have become very homesick. But I realized that I am growing up, and I really like who I am becoming.

Through the numerous amounts of laughter that was released in the crazy, busy, and seemingly frustrating situations, I did not allow myself to be affected by the negative aspects of the day, but rather learned to laugh them off. And you know what...? That sole idea of laughing off the frustrations made the trip 20 times more enjoyable.

So, now I am sticking to the idea that I should not get caught up in the small details of life, but rather laugh off the frustrations and enjoy that time that I have here, wherever that may be.

Additionally, I got to be on the set of Good Morning America! Actually in the studio, which was so cool! It was amazing to see how the production of a live program is constructed and how last minute decisions are made constantly. Also, I was on TV! It was pretty cool if I do say so myself, but it was most definitely an experience I won't forget anytime soon.

slaughter house five

I've read Slaughter House Five once before in high school, and I never really recognized the depth and meaning of the novel until my second reading. As Kurt Vonnegut writes the commentary about the war and the tragic, gruesome, and remorseful occurrences, there is great humor encompassed within the story itself. So it goes.

In Chapter 3, one of the main scenes that stuck out to me was the plaque with the Serenity Prayer..

God grant me me

The serenity to accept

the things I cannot change,

courage,

to change the things I can,

and wisdom always to tell the difference.

I have always kept this prayer written somewhere in my room, car, or even my phone. I've always felt some sort of connection with these words. Billy Pilgrim's commentary on this prayer was something I found to be very interesting.

"Among the things Billy Pilgrim could not change were the past, the present, and the future."

Here we see the hopelessness that Billy Pilgrim seems to feel, as he is stuck in frustration with time and its control. I believe that the idea of being stuck in time, with things that we are unable to change, serve as relatable topics that we as readers, and humans, can relate to completely. It is true that we as humans, in fact, have little to no control on the past, present, or future, which makes the statement about Billy Pilgrim's hopelessness relatable, to some.

Throughout the first three chapters, there are great descriptions of destructive and gruesome events that occurred in the war, but most were complemented with, "so it goes." Destruction turns casual...Incongruity Theory in action.

Death is something that is never given any emotion, or remorse within Slaughter House Five, for it is displayed as a part of life, something that does not merit emotion or sadness. So it goes.

This could be deemed sad, to think that one's death is merely a part of life and not a saddening event, but I believe it is Vonnegut's humor coming out to play. Perhaps Vonnegut is mocking the nature of humans to mourn the passing of a loved one, but I believe my analysis will be much stronger as I complete the book.

One of my favorite parts of the book is the explanation of how so many men were killed, the city was burned to ashes, and one man was arrested for taking a teapot. Here I see Vonnegut's humor playing an active role immediately in the opening of the novel. Here, there is great incongruity in the fact that one would not expect the arrest of a man solely because he stole a teapot, while the whole city is being burned to ruins. Although subtle, Vonnegut's humor is active throughout the novel, especially with the commentary of "so it goes," and "poo-tee-weet."

As I already see humor actively working within Vonnegut's novel, Slaughter House Five, I am eager to complete the novel and recognize and appreciate the humor that I did not see in my first time reading this novel.

I was told he was going into emergency surgery, and things weren't looking good...

This was not the original plan for the weekend. It was Mom's Weekend for my sorority and I was SO excited to have my mom and aunt come in and spend the weekend with me. We had dinner, shopping, and many other things planned to fill the weekend, and I was counting down the days. On Wednesday night, I was sitting in night class when I checked my phone and had seven missed calls and two voicemails. I knew something had to be going on....

When I listened to the voicemails, I was given the news. My uncle was about to have a quadruple bypass surgery. My mom and aunt were not longer coming to Fort Worth, which was clearly the right choice. Yes, it was disappointing to miss out on the fun weekend, but family is top priority. I knew what I needed to; I quickly booked my flight and headed home Friday morning.

The weekend was spent sitting in the lonely halls of the hospital, waiting for news, and comforting family members. We almost lost my uncle twice this weekend, and it was a huge wake up call for all of us. It became so apparent that life is so short, and we should never take advantage of our time here. We all realized that we must set aside out differences and come together as one; after all, we are family.

While we wandered the halls of the hospital for hours on end, my mom, aunt, and I made up for lost time. We reminisced on old memories, and truly tried making the best of the situation. As sad as it was to see the family hurting in a time when many things were uncertain, we came together as a family and bonded over lost time, and we created a weekend that we won't forget for many years. In fact, there was contagious laughter that rang through the hospital, joking and teasing, crying and laughing over stories we had never heard before. I tend to be one to hold in my emotions, but this weekend... I laughed, I cried, and I had an absolutely wonderful time with my family.

It's unfortunate that a situation like this is what it took to get the whole family together, but it brought us together, making us closer than we have ever been before. I am so excited to hear that my uncle will be able to go home tomorrow, and spend time in his own house finally!

While I was home, I spent time looking at old pictures, and realizing that our time here is limited; this trip redefined my view on life and the opportunities I need to take advantage of, and the wrongs I must forgive. I came across many pictures of laughter and happiness; it was great to see the love back in action this weekend.

Just as it is said, laughter is the best medicine. I truly believe the family bonding, the laughter, and the love that filled my uncle's hospital room improved the morale and made everyone realize what was truly important.

While I was reminiscing on old times, I came across this great picture of my loving parents from my Dad's graduation and achievement of his PhD. I am so proud to have him as my dad; although we may not always see eye to eye, I shared an amazing time of laughter and happiness with him this weekend...meant the absolute world to me.
Today we focused a lot on the different aspects of humor within the United States and Saudi Arabia. The way that Nasser explained it to me, it sounds like our humor is relatable in a few different ways.

He explained to me that the play on words is a widely used form of humor in Saudi Arabia, and that he finds those types of jokes in America humorous and interesting. He explained to me that learning the different uses of the same words was not difficult, but is actually interesting to him instead. Additionally, Nasser told me that for many of the jokes that the Saudi's tell, they make fun of themselves and put themselves as the butt of the joke. As we have seen in a few of our in-class presentations on the humor around the world, it is a common theme to put oneself as the butt of the joke. Sometimes, it's just easier to make fun of yourself; it tears down the barriers of vulnerability.

As we continued to talk, he explained to me that he does not celebrate birthdays in his country; apparently, the celebration of birth is not as big of a deal compared to here in the United States where we go above and beyond to celebrate the anniversary of you popping out of the womb. As his story continued, he told me that he helped an America friend celebrate her birthday this weekend and he was a little confused by the whole idea. When I tried to explain the concept of a birthday, I caught myself sounding really stupid and not really able to describe why we do what we do. But really, why do we celebrate a birthday? Yes, it's great to have a day when all of the attention is on you, but it is a weird concept if you really think about it. Regardless, he was entertained by the fact that we commemorate a day solely to one person just because they were welcoming into the world however many years ago.

Nasser went down to the Stockyards this weekend and had dinner at a BBQ restaurant. Needless to say, he was dumbfounded. He was amazed at the amount of meat that was placed in front of him, and how we as Americans practically celebrate the art of eating, and take it to a whole new level. And I agree, I think everything we as Americans do is blown up to a weird level of exaggeration and obsession. He did enjoy the dinner, he did admit, but he still could not get over how "big" America, and especially Texas makes things out to be. Welcome to Texas!

Nassar also told me about his experience while attending the rodeo here in Fort Worth. He explained that he thought it was a very weird and violent concept, but he enjoyed seeing the animals and riding the rides. He told me that in Saudi Arabia they have festivals with animals, similar to the rodeo, but with camels and horses instead. A well-celebtrated tradition is the racing of Arabian hordes, which I found to be interesting!

The last topic we touched on today was the idea of numbers. He explained to me that in Saudi Arabia, they say their numbers backwards compared to the way we speak. He compared this way of speaking to Spanish. I can speak a little bit of Spanish coming from New Mexico, so I easily understood what he was trying to say. I kept asking him if it was difficult for him to learn a whole new set of numbers, ordering, letters, etc. and he continuously responded with "no, it's simple." It is apparent to me that Nasser is intelligent and eager to learn. I have really enjoyed having these conversations with him and we have already set up our next meeting time.

By the age of 20, I was in a relationship for four years, and then one day, it practically evaporated into thin air. Yes, it was terrible, but I look back on it and I have learned and grown so much as a person. I say this with such bluntness because when I read this story, I laughed, smiled, and saw far too many connections within my life and the numerous relationship stories I've heard. I've always heard it said that if you can look back on a past experience and laugh about it, even if it was at one time a complete struggle, you've successfully come out on top and are ready to move forward.

Dave Barry points out the characteristics that we, as women, notice and dread about men in general, and the way that they perceive relationships. Commitment and the idea or classification of a "relationship" can be rough territory; even just starting out the conversation can be like embarking on a boating trip through the Bermuda triangle. Guaranteed, you and your potential suitor will not have a 100% resemblance in your idea of what a relationship means, how communication plays a part, the social implications of your "relationship", etc. Plus, being a girl, I know we over think these details WAY too much. We, oh so terribly, dissect the smallest details of a conversation, add in details that didn't even happen, and make the situation much worse than it really needs to be. As I say this, I realize how embarrassing and utterly ridiculous it is, but hey, it's a work in progress for all of us women!

We learn from the way our father treated our mother, grew from how people of the opposite sex treated us as we grew up, and as life moves forward you begin to establish your standards and requirements for a suitor. And... those might be wildly unrealistic, but it's a start. I love the way Barry exaggerated the way we as women must remind, and continuously reestablish the fact that "me and you are in a relationship." Hilarious! It brought out many cackles and giggles from myself.

I believe that exaggeration is the prime factor in the story that makes it, in a way, relatable, and yet so laughter inducing. I love the example of how the wife must remind the husband after many years of marriage that they are in fact married! This form of exaggeration make the story beyond a real "relationship guide" and molds it into a complete parody of relationships as we know them today. But just like anything in the world we live in today, not all men act in the highly exaggerated and made-fun of way that Barry describes...thankfully.

But hey, that's not to say that just because the men have this way about them to be oblivious and distant from the relationships at hand, women are perfect. Because we aren't. We make mistakes, exaggerate, emotionalize, and dramatize a lot. I think Barry could write a very well-versed commentary on the absurdity of women in relationships and induce quite a lot of laughter.

until out next laugh,

I absolutely enjoyed reading "The Waltz." I found it to be wildly humorous, and embarrassingly relatable. For those of you who don't know me so well, I have a strong tendency to make things awkward. Why? I don't know how not to! I also let me anxiety get to me, way too much. So, this story of back and forth panic was a great read, and kind of made me feel....normal? I guess I'm not the only one!

If I'm meeting someone for lunch, I will panic. Do I get there early? Do I get there a few minutes late? Do I order, or do I wait for her to get there? Does she want to sit in a booth, or would a table be more comfortable...? Should I dress up, or can I stick to my relaxed look?

Walking into the restaurant: Okay I don't see her. Oh my god, everyone is looking at me. What if they think I got stood up? Should I ask the waiter if she is here? Should I get a table and wait? But what if they think I am eating alone...?

Hey, guess what. NO ONE CARES.

When I read "The Waltz" I felt like it was a commentary of my life. And, it served as a compete flashback to my freshman homecoming dance, which I must say was the epitome of awkward. But really, whose freshman year dances weren't awkward....? Rocking the braces, kitten heels, and a dress hanging lower than my knees, and my far from professional dance moves... it was a recipe for a fabulous night.

Anxiety, worry, and over thinking: this is an aspect of my life that I am working hard to transform, and move away from the anxiety and worry. Because you know what? No one really cares, so I might as well relax and enjoy myself. This actually is a new years resolution I have been working hard at. I tend to freak myself out, which results in me having no enjoyment in whatever I am doing. But why? Life is meant to be enjoyed, and my efforts of laughing more have been successful and rewarding.

So now its time for change. And, I must admit, it's been great. I smile more, worry less, and laugh...a lot. The commentary within "The Waltz" was such a relatable thought process for many girls, and I have a feeling that they guys who read this story were a little bit overwhelmed. Yes, we do over think things, way too much. But now that I recognize this tendency.. I am working to make a change.

Reading this story served as a bit of a reminder as to why I have been working so hard on my internal self, and a wake up call to things that don't warrant a worry. I thoroughly enjoyed the way this story was written, and caught myself laughing throughout the short story.

until our next laugh,
I must admit, I was nervous to meet him...I had a feeling I was going to be really awkward and not have anything to talk about. BUT, I was wrong! Nassar was eager to talk about his home country, and I was eager to listen and tell him about my life in America.

Nassar and I got along great! What a relief! We met at the TCU bookstore and quickly started our conversation. Nassar is all the way from Saudi Arabia, and is still working on adjusting to American life. When I began to ask him about his home, he lit up, eager to tell me all about it. He quickly pointed out that there are amazingly large differences between our life styles, ranging from our outlook on family, food, work, and holidays.

Nassar is proud of where he comes from, and admittedly favors its greatly compared to the United States. He explained to me how shocked and confused he was that our family structure and pride vary greatly. Family is an especially large aspect of his culture, and it serves as a main identifier. He also pointed out how interesting he found our desire to be independent and on our own, where as his culture focuses greatly on family dependency. I found it interesting to hear him talk about how his life at home differs greatly from the day-to-day aspects that we are part of on TCU's campus.

He did admit, he doesn't like Texas much.. HA! Well I love Texas, and when we disagreed, he couldn't help but laugh. I thought this was by far the best parts of the conversation. Whenever Nassar struggled to find the words he wanted to use, or couldn't explain something to me, he would laugh! I immediately connected this laugh to the Relief Theory... his struggle to find the right words led to laughter, allowing us to become much more comfortable with each other.

One of the biggest concepts theta Nassar struggled with was the idea of age and numbers. When I asked him how old he was, he said he wasn't sure! Well, we came to find that he is 22. When we finally figured that out, he kept laughing! He thought it was so funny that I had to help him figure out what his age was, especially since I am younger than him.

Overall, it was such a great experience to get to meet him and talk about our differing cultures. It was so amazing to see how every aspect of our cultures and lifestyles are so different primarily because of where we are from. It was a positive experience and we already have planned out our next meeting time for next week.

until then,

This weekend I celebrated my 20th birthday with my closest friends; I might even admit that it was one of the best weekends of my life. I laughed so much this weekend. Why? Pure happiness. This weekend I set aside the worries of school, and spent genuine time with my friends. Really getting to know people, meeting new friends, and bonding over old memories stirs up much laughter. I've realized that laughter doesn't always come from a funny story, a witty joke, or a situation full of irony; there was a new kind of laughter that came about this weekend, and it was of happiness. I like that, happy laughter.

Make sense right? Contagious laughter while being surrounded by your closest friends, who know your weaknesses and vulnerabilities and yet will still share genuine companionship. That feeling of closeness will bring about great happiness, and of course laughter.

Laughter is a great response to something humorous, but it's also a sign of contentment, happiness, and joy. As I get caught up in the day to day things, I sometimes lose sight of what is going on around me. There is so much to be happy about and this weekend brought back those positive feelings. Since I had such an uplifting weekend, I'm optimistic for the weeks to come, taking advantage of any opportunity to spend time with my closest friends, and of course, laugh.

Cheers to the 20s!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08409198863273226722noreply@blogger.com2
